History
YDM4 is a type of locomotive leased to KTMB by Indian Railways. There is quite a number of them in KTMB’s rolling stock. According to the train operator, all locomotives in the rolling stock have their own set of problems, brushing off allegations that YDM4 is among the best locomotive KTMB has ever had.
Then, five additional units were brought into Malaysia in 2009, refurbished by Southern Railway Workshop, Tiruchirappalli, India (source: Wikipedia Bahasa Melayu). YDM 4 originally is used by Indian Railways from 1961 until 1993.
YDM 4 is intended to be the temporary stopgap while waiting for the new locomotives. Eventually, these locomotives will be returned back to India. Therefore, the fleet numbers for YDM 4 are retained.
For KTM Intercity Ekspres Senandung Langkawi service, KTMB uses two YDM4 locomotives because sole unit is does not have sufficient tractive force to pull all other railcars.
